Overview: It may not have escaped you that Ryanair actually have two airports in Stockholm; this is the larger one. Really, there is not much difference between them for the ordinary traveller; both are really far away from Stockholm at roughly 100km. Your choice whether to fly here or Vasteras would be dictated by airfare.
Skavsta is a reasonably big airport; third largest in Sweden with Ryanair having a big base here. There are lots of flights and (as of 2008) a decent frequency to London Stansted and other European cities.
Getting there: The airport is real far away from Stockholm, so the only option is the airport coach, which takes arounds 90 minutes. You can buy the tickets from the machines outside or in the baggage hall and the buses leave from just outside the entrance. It’s pretty difficult to get to the trainline (7km) and probably will not save you any time.
General tips: Skavsta could really do with a little more investment; it’s pretty sparse inside, but on the whole acceptable. Flights tend to be bunched up at the end of the day when Ryanair has a load of them going out so things can get a little crowded at this time. Shopping choices here are pretty limited, and the food is really expensive owing to the exchange rates. The departure gates feature a nice duty-free shop and also some smoking vestubles (basically a tiny room with a big fan), rare in airports. Other than that, gates are pretty unremarkable.
Budget travellers guide: Not really a good place to come on a budget. The return coach journey cost – 249sek (almost £30) is a big consideration to make when you could fly another airline into the main airport Arlanda. The long coach journeys will also rob 3 hours off your day trip here.
