Overview: Marketed as the airport for Eurodisney, within an hours drive the tag ‘Paris’ is optimistic at best, with the airport lying 120km from even the outskirts of the city. Nevertheless, there is a large catchment region for the airport with the nearby regions of Champagne going roughly unserved and the airport lying around the same distance to Luxembourg than Frankfurt-Hahn. Vatry has no passenger traffic at present, and therefore you can expect that airport fees were one of the main reasons for choosing here as a place to operate. It’s not a totally new facility, with with airport primarily already used for cargo shipments.
Getting there: With just two routes available at present to the airport, it’s unlikely that there will be a dedicated coach service just as yet – and probably just as unlikely that it will feature Paris – with the French capital lying at least two hours (and maybe up to three) hours drive away – which would involve a substantial coach fare. Instead, there is a bus connection taking you to Chalons-en-Champagne which offers a rail connection for onward travel. Expect car hire and taxi services to be thin on the ground as the airport develops for passenger service.
General Tips: Although Ryanair market this as the Disney airport, it actually lies over an hours drive away, meaning that for many people, it probably is not going to be that more hassle just to take the train, or even drive from Paris itself. However, with a new terminal building able to handle 7 million passengers a year, there is some scope for expansion here, as the airport looks to this type of revenue stream. The airport features a modern design but expect further developments as it adapts for LCC use.
Budget Travellers Guide: Vatry is only accessible via Oslo-Rygge and Stockholm-Skavsta initially, and even here only twice a week. On the plus side, fares are very low – with a very thin slice of the market to aim for given the flight frequencies. It’s unlikely that any other major LCC’s with Paris connections would want to move here, and instead, Vatry would compete with Beauvais for additional flights. Additional development on transport infrastructure, perhaps a rail link would see this as a more viable alternative but this is a few years off yet.
