We’re not going to harp on too much about the NEX-5 camera apart from that if you’re shopping for it, you should know what it is: a top-end hybrid camera – not a proper SLR or simple point-and-shoot device, but with the best of both worlds; great image quality in a portable package. I’m sure you’ll be able to find reviews on this anywhere on the web.
Dixons Travel price is £468.70. How does this stack up with the rest of the prices?
The Dixons website price isn’t exactly specific as there are plenty of variants of the model – for example, there are lots of NEX-5 cameras around the £400 mark (Play + Quidco discount). We’d bet that the version being referred to is the KS version – typically available for £500+.
How does this compare with the three competitors:
Amazon: You can see the link here: they’re doing it for £479.99 including free delivery.
Comet: Not available.
John Lewis: £516 with a 1-year guarantee.
Verdict: The duty-free price is certainly cheaper by the region of over a tenner. For me, I’d rather get it from Amazon; chances are if you’re going out of an airport, you’re going to want to use the camera on your travels and it’s rather worth just getting all the boxes, instructions etc out of the way and leaving it at home before you go. The John Lewis price is interesting but effectively you’re paying around £50 for the 1 year guarantee which probably isn’t that worth it. Remember if you are intent on purchasing make sure you are comparing like for like.
